A number of prominent Republicans have been wary of special counsel Robert Mueller's possible motives in taking on a wide-ranging investigation of Russia's interference in the 2016 election as well as worried about Mueller's hired team of lawyers to help in the probe.

On Tuesday, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee joined the chorus of critics.

On ABC News' "This Week" program last Sunday, former House Speaker and Trump adviser Newt Gingrich suggested Mueller's legal team raises questions of a politically motivated prosecution.

"The first four names are all people who gave to Democrats," Gingrich said. "Now in this environment with a Justice Department where 97 percent of the donations last year went to Hillary — 97 percent — explain to me why I should relax as a Republican."

On Monday, Fox News also reported two team members are expected to raise the most questions about their neutrality.

According to Fox, Michael Dreeben has argued on behalf of the government on the need to expand the definition of obstruction of justice.

A second hire, Andrew Weissman, has a reputation for aggressively turning witnesses, Fox News reported.
