Huckabee: No Gas Tax Hike to Help War on Terror

MSNBC's "Morning Joe"

The war on terror needs to be fought, Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee agreed Wednesday, but adding a one-cent hike to the federal gas tax will hurt Americans at a time when they need wage increases, not decreases.

"We have an incredibly anemic economic growth, it's less than 2 percent," the former Arkansas governor said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program. "When our economy was growing at 4 percent as it was through the '90s, we were able to fully fund Social Security and Medicare. There are a lot of things that happened with economic growth that is far better than taking what little money people have in their pockets away from them."

"Working-class people need a wage increase," he continued, "and you're not going to get that by raising taxes. You're going to cut their wages."

For the past 40 years, Huckabee said, "there have been stagnant wages" in the United States for the bottom 90 percent of the economy.

"Why on Earth would you want to continue to gut-punch the very people who need a wage increase rather than a decrease?" he said.

Instead, what the country should be doing is exploring the "hundreds of years of energy we have under our feet," Huckabee said. "We have an adequate amount. We are the number-one energy exporter to the world, and [we] ought to take the energy marketplace away from the Russians, Iranians and Saudis."

And as for raising the federal gas tax, "why do we need it?" said Huckabee. "Why do we need to raise taxes? You always want to raise taxes. Why don't we have the exploration of our energy, sell it, take away the marketplaces [and] we've become the supplier to Europe, Asia and Africa."

Also on the program, Huckabee said he supports splitting up Iraq by giving the Kurds their own territory, which they can govern and defend.

"The biggest mistake is that we failed to keep our promise to the Kurds," said Huckabee. "We promised to give them arms. Baghdad never delivered the arms to the Kurds, and we left those folks hanging and the result is thousands of them were slaughtered by ISIS. We made a terrible tactical error."
