House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Democratic Congressional Campaign DCCC Chairman Steve Israel spelled out to Democrats that there is an “urgent need” for campaign cash as the clock ticks down to the midterm elections.

During a caucuswide conference call to the DCCC delegation, Pelosi and Israel made it clear that members must pay their annual dues by Friday so that vulnerable Democratic candidates can run last-minute ads and continue last-ditch efforts to get out the vote, Politico reported.

The political news website reported that only 77 of the caucus’ 199 members will have paid their dues in full by Oct. 31, despite the fact that more than 90 percent of House Democrats have contributed cash to the committee, according to a DCCC dues sheet.

A Democratic aide told Politico that the DCCC desperately needs more money “to keep pace with Republican outside groups and self-funders who continue to dump money into races across the country in a tough environment.”

The GOP is favored to pick up around a dozen seats or more next week due to the “extreme unpopularity” of President Barack Obama and the expected low turnout by lukewarm liberal voters during an off-year election, Politico said.

But Rep. Israel of New York has recently sent out a memo stating that several struggling incumbents are still in with a good shot of winning.

“Thanks to your diligent work, generosity and commitment, the DCCC is aggressively moving to protect our colleagues and go toe-to-toe with Republican outside groups that are raining millions down in this tough environment,” Israel wrote. “As a result, not a single Democratic incumbent is out of contention.”

“You’ve heard me say a million times that I wanted higher quality ads — ones that would break through the media clutter,” Israel added. “We invested in making our ads more distinctive in crowded media markets — and effective at tattooing Republicans with brands that they can’t escape.”
