Mick Mulvaney Criticizes 'Nonsensical' CBO Methodology

Fox News' "Fox & Friends"

Mick Mulvaney, the Office of Management and Budget director, took aim at the Congressional Budget Office on Thursday, noting that the office is using methodology that a professor who helped craft Obamacare created.

"We can talk for an hour about this CBO if you wanted to. Keep in mind that Jonathan Gruber, who helped fashion Obamacare, his methodology is still being used by the CBO to measure the replacement and the repeal bill, so it's almost like it's not a fair analysis," Mulvaney said Thursday on "Fox & Friends."

Mulvaney said on "Fox & Friends" that the CBO reports are "nonsensical until you realize the methodology that they are using."

"I don't think anybody around here is making their decisions based upon the CBO score," Mulvaney added.

He said that Obamacare is forcing people to lose insurance now, and called for focus on that instead of the CBO score.

"You can sit here and discuss how someone might lose coverage under some program in the future, but the real issue is that there are people who are actually losing coverage today under Obamacare, and that's where I think the discussion should be," Mulvaney said.

On Wednesday, the CBO reported that a bill that would repeal, but not replace Obamacare would decrease the deficit by $473 billion over a decade, but would force 32 million to lose their health insurance.

Gruber, an MIT economics professor whose specialty is health economics, was criticized while Obamacare was in the works for conflicts of interest, vague descriptions, and his opinions about the bill, according to Politico.

The budget director has disagreed with the CBO scoring before, saying in May that the office's numbers on the American Healthcare Act proposal are "false."
