Former CIA head Michael Hayden said Sunday he'll vote for a third-party candidate over the GOP and Democratic nominees — neither of whom have convinced him they're "worthy" of the nation's highest office.

In an interview with radio host John Catsimatidis on "The Cats Roundtable," Hayden, who served under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, said he doesn't believe the choice is only between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

His remarks start at the 13:35-minute mark.

"I'm uncomfortable with the nominee of both of the major political parties," Hayden said. "A lot of my friends are saying 'yeah, that's nice, Hayden, but you have to vote for one of them.' But I'm not so sure I do."

"A vote is taking our sacred suffrage, our chunk of sovereignty, and bestowing it on someone because he or she is worthy, and I'm having trouble getting to that point with either of the major candidates," he said.

"As a practical matter, I get it," he added. "Somebody is going to win, but you know, no matter who it is, for these two, I'm hoping they don't think they're sweeping into office with some powerful mandate. And for people like me that decide to vote for some other choice, might deny them that sense of mandate, which would make, I think, things ever worse."

Libertarian presidential nominee Gary Jonson and Green Party candidate Jill Stein are trying to garner enough support to make it to the debate stage this fall, The Hill notes.
