McCain: Obama Not Premature on Gadhafi's Demise

Wednesday, 24 Aug 2011 03:22 PM

Sen. John McCain disagreed with Fox News hosts who said President Barack Obama’s announcement of the end of Col. Moammar Gadhafi’s reign over Libya was premature.

“He’s on his way out,” the Arizona Republican said Tuesday on “Fox & Friends.” “We’ve got to concentrate on making sure there’s not the kind of Baghdad experience we had [after the liberation of Iraq]. We need reconciliation to get the arms depots under control . . . and get in there and help them set up a functioning government. That’s what we should be focusing on.”

McCain dismissed the defiant appearance of Gadhafi’s son Seif al-Islam’s in Tripoli as “a PR thing,” insisting that the opposition’s mission was all but finalized.

Host Steve Doocy mentioned rumors that a Libyan constitution is being drawn up based on Islamic fundamentalist law, and suggested, “What we might wind up with over there is something closer to a radical Islamic government, and that’s not what we want.”

McCain shot down those fears, citing a statement from the Libyan opposition last year that said the new leadership would stand up for women’s rights.
