McCain Backs Cornyn Against Tea Party Challenge

By    |   Wednesday, 10 Apr 2013 03:15 PM

Sen. John McCain is giving financial support to Sen. John Cornyn’s 2014 re-election campaign to the Senate, in a bid to help insure that another tea party favorite such as Ted Cruz does not unseat the two-term Texas senator.

The Arizonan donated $5,000 to Cornyn’s campaign in March, according to the Houston Chronicle. McCain has been critical of Cruz and recently referred to him as a “wacko bird” for his decision to filibuster CIA director John Brennan.

“Right now, Cornyn’s biggest challenge comes from the right, and it’s safe to assume McCain would not be in favor of a Cruz clone coming to Congress in 2014,” writes the Chronicle’s blog, Texas on the Potomac.

Cornyn, 61, is a heavy favorite to win the Texas primary, but conservative Erick Wyatt has announced he plans to run against him, saying he wants “younger blood” in the Senate.

McCain has also been critical of the promise that Cruz and other GOP senators have made to filibuster upcoming gun legislation. McCain called Cruz “disrespectful” in his line of questioning to Chuck Hagel during Hagel’s nomination hearings for defense secretary.

McCain withstood a primary election against tea party favorite J.D. Hayworth in 2010.
