Hillary Clinton needs to discontinue talking about her 2016 presidential campaign loss, according to Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

"We, as a party, need to understand what happened. My advice would be to Hillary, 'There's enough people that will do that and get that information out,'" the Democratic governor said on Politico's Off Message podcast.

The governor said Democrats should focus on the 2018 midterm elections, not the 2020 presidential vote. Since he is term-limited as governor, he plans to support the Democratic nominee for his job after Tuesday's primary, then spend the next year campaigning on behalf of Democratic candidates for governor around the U.S., he said in Politico.

A presidential campaign for McAuliffe in 2020 is possible, insiders said, according to Politico. However, McAuliffe might have some strikes against him by being known as former President Bill Clinton's best friend, who went into business with Hillary Clinton's brother and was under FBI investigation, according to Politico.

His work as Virginia governor has made McAuliffe a more viable candidate, a Democratic consultant said in Politico. "Anyone who first knew him 30 years ago, you would have said great fundraiser, great guy. No one would have thought of him as a plausible president. The governorship of Virginia has changed him," said Bob Schrum, who worked with McAuliffe on Dick Gephardt's 1988 campaign.

"Terry is such a big personality and so engaging, optimistic and happy, I see how he could pull that off," a Clinton veteran said in Politico's report.

"Too many people are lemon suckers in politics today. I mean, at the end of the day, I have been successful by motivating people. People want to be with winners, not whiners," McAuliffe said, according to Politico.

On May 30, McAuliffe launched the Victory Fund to take on President Trump and Washington Republicans, according to the Washington Examiner. "This is our chance to fight back," the announcement read.
