GOP Sen. Mark Kirk: I'm Writing In Petraeus For President

("The Steve Cochran Show"/SoundCloud)

Sen. Mark Kirk, an Illinois Republican, said Thursday he can't vote for his party's presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump, and will instead write in Gen. David Petraeus.

Kirk made the statement on WGN Radio's "Steve Cochran Show" and it was reported on by Business Insider.

Kirk initially endorsed Trump, but took it back amid some of Trump's more controversial statements. Kirk is in an uncertain re-election effort and is among downticket Republicans distancing themselves from the expected nominee.

"I share your concerns about Trump every day with people," Cochran told Kirk on his show. "And then I look at the alternative choice and I never thought I'd be in a position to even consider voting for Hillary Clinton. And yet here we are with those being our two main choices. I don't know what to say to people when they say every day, 'Well, what are we supposed to do?'"

Kirk said he had an answer: "I'm gonna write in Petraeus when I vote. And I encourage you to. I want to see Petraeus get a lot of votes so that just shows that there are thinking people out there that are really concerned about the security of the United States. Thinking that someone who has an outstanding potential as commander-in-chief and can be, should be, our new leader. With these two choices that you almost think it's Tweedle-Dee dumb and Tweedle-Dee bad."

Petraeus' name has been discussed a lot in recent days after FBI Director James Comey recommended former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton not be prosecuted for having classified information on her private email server. Critics of the call not to prosecute have brought up comparisons to Petraeus' case because he pleaded guilty to giving classified information to his biographer and mistress Paula Broadwell.

In addition to serving as commander of U.S. and multi-national forces in Afghanistan, Petraeus also served as CIA director.
