Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio is a strong candidate for president and not just because he is surging in the polls, according to an analyst.

Rubio is leading several candidates in recent polls, since making his announcement to run for president almost two weeks ago, as other candidates have done after their announcements.

But senior political writer and analyst Harry Enten for FiveThirtyEight.com says that Rubio has other traits that make him a candidate who is likely to stick around.

Some of those traits include a candidate who is likable, a candidate who is building a campaign infrastructure, and a candidate with positions that voters respond well to.

"Those look good for Rubio," Enten writes.

Rubio is liked in the party as well as among conservatives and moderates, as seen with his ability to win in the Senate in 2010 from a battleground state like Florida.

Enten cites an average of CBS News polls that has been taken since the beginning of the year of the Republican field and said that Rubio has a net favorability rating toward the top of the list, just behind former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.

In addition, "the gap between Republicans who could see themselves voting for Rubio and those who couldn't is among the field's best."

He noted that no announced or possible Republican candidate has risen above 15 percent in the polls, as is the case for Rubio in the most recent Quinnipiac University Poll, which is a sign that the GOP field is so unsettled.

But he contends that Rubio's positives put him in a good spot to appeal to undecided Republicans.

While Rubio's current surge in the polls may be temporary, there aren't a lot of other candidates who do as well "in the underlying data," which often determines which candidates rise to the top in elections, he added.
