Pro-Lugar Group’s $500,000 Ad Campaign Against Mourdock

The Indiana GOP race for the Senate is about to get nastier with supporters of veteran incumbent Dick Lugar pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars in to attack his challenger, Richard Mourdock.

The fight, already shaping up to be the closest-watched of the primary season, has so far been mainly a one-way street as Mourdock has slammed Lugar as being out of touch.

But now the establishment is fighting back, Politico reports, spending more than half a million dollars to try to bolster Lugar.

The American Action Network is putting out the ad and communications director Dan Conston made it clear it would pull no punches against Mourdock, the Indiana state treasurer. “Indiana Republicans have yet to meet the real Richard Mourdock, but they soon will,” he said.

“Richard Mourdock has a troubling record, from repeatedly missing official meetings to repeatedly accepting illegal tax breaks to making bad junk bond bets with Hoosiers’ pensions," claimed Conston.

The two Republicans faced off in a nationally televised debate on Wednesday that was marked by its civility, with Mourdock saying how he respected Lugar’s long service and Lugar repeatedly referring to his challenger as “my friend.”
