Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, is urging Republican leaders to have a briefing on the criminal investigation into five congressional Information Technology workers alleged data theft.

"I'm circulating a letter, and we're going to ask for just that," Gohmert told The Daily Caller Thursday after a "Conversations with Conservatives" news conference.

Five former IT specialists for Democratic legislators have been accused of stealing equipment from House offices and of "serious, potentially illegal, violations of House IT policies," according to Politico.

"We need to make sure that the Capitol police have the resources they need," Gohmert added. "If they need to hire a forensic computer expert to come in, whatever they need, let's make sure they have it so they can figure out how badly compromised the House was."

An unnamed "high-level House staffer" told Fox News last week that although there are no reports or evidence that the IT staffers accessed emails, the inquiry has raised some concern on the matter.

The congressman hopes to ensure a "proper investigation" in case of a national security breach.

"We need to look at where mistakes were made," Gohmert said. "How do we make sure that we don't have people that can come in and compromise our system quite so easily?"

The Daily Caller reported earlier this month that two of the former IT staffers, brothers Imran, Abid and Jamal Awan, allegedly "kept their stepmother in sort of illegal captivity from Oct. 16, 2016 to Feb. 2," according to an anonymous relative.
