Lou Holtz: I Support Trump, Hillary Wants to Keep Present-Day Policies

Legendary former football coach and ESPN analyst Lou Holtz said Thursday that his relationship with ex-President Bill Clinton goes back several years and that he supported his bids for the White House, but he is supporting Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton because she wants to continue present-day policies.

"I listened to her campaign speeches," Holtz told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program. "She wants to even double down some of the things and I don't like the direction that the country is going. I'm an old man right now.

"My birthday candles cost more than the cake and all I'm trying to do is what I feel is in the best interest of the country. I think I have six pallbearers so I'm not worried about making friends."

The coach explained that he was coaching football in Arkansas when he began his relationship with Bill Clinton.

"I had to suspend three athletes [who scored] 78 percent of the touchdowns," said Holtz. "They took me to court and he's the attorney general who represented me and did a great job. The players would not be allowed to play became the largest underdog that has been to the [Orange] Bowl and we ended up winning the game, 31-6."

But Trump offers a change in the country that Holtz believes is due.

"When you look at the things happening in our country, we have fewer people working today than in the last 40 years, we have a much larger population," the coach said. "We have more people in poverty, more people on welfare, more people on food stamps and yet the budget, the national debt has almost doubled, up to $20 trillion."

Also said Holtz, "we don't protect our borders. If you don't protect the borders you don't really have a country."

He believes that there were 17 of the "best candidates" he ever saw in the GOP race, but Trump came out on top because of the situation in Washington.

"The people went and voted Republicans into the House of Representatives, nothing changed," said the coach. "They said, 'well, we need the Senate also.' They voted them into the Senate. Still nothing changed. And the people are saying enough is enough."

He also praised Trump because he is not politically correct.

"I grew up where people bullied you and called you names, you learned to handle it," said Holtz. "Everything is now politically correct. People endear themselves to Donald Trump because he's not politically correct."

Meanwhile, Holtz, who was born in Follansbee, West Virginia and grew up across the Ohio River in East Liverpool, Ohio, said that people from West Virginia deserve better than Clinton's conflicting statements and plans for the coal industry.

"My grandfather came over from Germany and he worked in a coal mine," said Holtz. "He was paid with company tokens. He had to live in company housing and company storage as well, but coal has played a very integral part in this country.

"I know everybody says it's dirty, they have done great things with it. The people of West Virginia are good, sound, hard-working people and I think they deserve better."
