Sen. Graham: Rand Paul's Foreign Policy Closer to Dad Than Reagan

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham said he takes no personal offense at being called a "lapdog" for President Barack Obama's foreign policy by fellow Republican Sen. Rand Paul, but he doesn't think Paul knows what he's talking about.

Appearing Thursday on Fox News Channel's "Your World with Neil Cavuto," Graham said he likes Paul and has worked with him on domestic issues.

If Paul wins the GOP presidential nomination, Graham said he will support him, but added, "On foreign policy he is much closer to Ron Paul than his is to Ronald Reagan."

Former Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who is Rand Paul's father, served in Congress as a Republican, but has run for president both on the GOP and Libertarian Party tickets. He staunchly opposes what he calls American military interventionism.

Rand Paul on Tuesday told Fox News that Graham and Arizona Sen. John McCain come "from a group of people who have been wrong about every foreign policy issue over the last two decades. ... These people are essentially the lapdogs for President Obama, and I think they're sensitive about that."

McCain on Wednesday told Cavuto, "Sen. Paul is the worst possible candidate of the 20 or so that are running on the most important issue, which is national security."

Graham told Cavuto that Rand Paul was the only senator opposing a resolution he introduced in 2012 that said the United States will not accept a nuclear-armed Iran.

"You cannot contain this regime once they have a nuclear weapon," Graham said. "So I can't imagine having the one senator who rejected the idea of containment … to be the best negotiator."

Graham said anyone can feel free to criticize McCain and himself, but added, "I would put my record up against challenging of Barack Obama's foreign policy against anybody in the country."

Graham also addressed reports that Iranian ships that were believed to be headed to Yemen with supplies for the Houthi rebels had turned around after being shadowed by American ships.

"I think if you stand up to the Iranians, they usually fold. That's true of most thugs," Graham said. "But at the end of the day, don't tout this as a great turnaround in terms of Iranian behavior. Turning the ships around is a good thing but Yemen has completely collapsed because of Iran, and the Iranians keep [Syrian President Basher] Assad in power, and he is the source of most of the problems in the Mideast."
