A furious Rush Limbaugh is calling the Republican Party "irrelevant" and blaming "hoodwinked" members for creating one of the largest political disasters he's ever seen by backing off their effort to defund Obamacare by initiating a government shutdown.

In the end, he said, they had simply bought into the Democratic line that their continued fight would anger independents and that they would be labeled racists by challenging the signature healthcare law of the nation's first black president. He described Republicans as "literally paralyzed because [President Barack] Obama is African-American."

"I was trying to think earlier today, if ever in my life I could remember any major political party being so irrelevant," Limbaugh said on his radio show Wednesday.

"I have never seen a major political party simply occupy placeholders, as the Republican Party is doing," he continued, adding that Republicans have yet to offer any "serious opposition" or a "package of principled beliefs" to really challenge "what's happening in this country."

Instead, the conservative radio host charged that Republican lawmakers have been "hoodwinked" by Democrats into believing that independents would turn against them and they would be branded racists if they disagreed with Obama.

"The Democrats can call Republicans hostage takers," Limbaugh said. "They can accuse them of taking ransom. They can accuse them of being terrorists, and that doesn't bother the independents. But when the Republicans question Obama's Obamacare plan, 'You racist pigs, how dare you!'

As a result, Limbaugh said, "Republicans have done everything they can to try to make everybody like them, and what they've ended up doing is creating one of the greatest political disasters I've ever seen in my lifetime, simply because they failed to show up.

"Then when they finally did make a play of showing up, they didn’t have the guts to stick with it.”
On Tuesday, Limbaugh had also criticized some Republicans for appearing to back off their goal of defunding or repealing Obamacare by talking about ways to amend it or delay implementation of some parts of it, according to Mediaite.

“I understand being hated . . . I understand needing to go out and get votes,” Limbaugh reportedly said of Republican lawmakers.

But he noted that many of them got elected by promising to kill off the healthcare law. "Apparently those were just campaign words to get to Washington," he said.
