Environmentalists Protest Keystone at Landrieu's DC Home

Environmental activists descended on Sen. Mary Landrieu's Capitol Hill home on Monday to protest the Louisiana Democrat's push for the Keystone XL pipeline.

Demonstrators stood in Landrieu's front yard carrying signs protesting the project, together with a massive inflatable pipeline that protesters "wrapped around the White House in protest three years ago," The New York Times reported.

Landrieu, who is seeking her fourth term in the Senate, has waged a tenacious lobbying campaign for the pipeline and has succeeded for now in giving the project new life.

After refusing for years to permit an up-or-down vote on the subject, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has scheduled one for Tuesday. Democrats hope that allowing an up-or-down vote on the project will bolster Landrieu's chances in a Dec. 6 Louisiana Senate runoff, where she faces Republican Rep. Bill Cassidy.

On Friday, the House voted 252-161 in favor of legislation introduced by Cassidy in support of the Keystone XL project. Landrieu spent Monday in Louisiana campaigning for re-election and on the phone trying to round up the 60th Senate vote needed to end a filibuster against the pipeline vote. On Friday, Landrieu claimed to have 59 votes in favor.

President Barack Obama has not said whether he will veto the project, but comments by White House spokesman Josh Earnest last week stating that President Obama takes a "dim view" of efforts to push the project through suggest that a veto is likely.
