Cuccinelli: Trump's Criticisms of Sessions 'Phenomenally Distracting'

Former Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli said President Donald Trump's incessant criticisms of his own attorney general are "phenomenally distracting."

Himself a former AG of Virginia, Cuccinelli said on CNN's "New Day" morning program that he empathizes with the beating Jeff Sessions is taking from Trump.

"It certainly is phenomenally distracting, even just to Jeff Sessions doing the job of the Department of Justice," Cuccinelli told CNN. "As he said, he's going to keep doing his job and keep showing up and that's what I would do if I were him. It also distracts from the broader agenda of the president.

"This is embarrassing, it's frustrating for (Sessions), but it doesn't stop him from doing his job unless he lets it, and I think he's made it very clear he isn't gonna let it stop him from doing his job," Cuccinelli said.

But just like the FBI continuing its work every day in the wake of James Comey's firing, Cuccinelli said nothing stops at the DOJ.

"It doesn't stop anything they're doing at the department," Cuccinelli said. "What goes on at the Department of Justice is overwhelmingly carried on by day-to-day professionals, and Jeff Sessions leads them, directs them. He is still doing all of that."
