Rove: 'Slow Economic Growth' at Top of List for GOP in 2016

The president will leave "a staggering array of domestic problems" in 2016 – including fewer jobs, a weak economy and busted entitlement programs – that challenge GOP presidential hopefuls to outline how they'll fix the "mess," political analyst Karl Rove says.

In an op-ed commentary for the Wall Street Journal posted Wednesday night, the former deputy chief of staff to President George W. Bush charged President Barack Obama's leadership "has been mistaken, insufficient or absent" in the past six years.

"Slow economic growth will be at the top of the list of problems" Obama will leave to his successor, Rove writes, asserting the 2.9 percent average annual growth has been the slowest since records started being compiled in the early 20th century.

"This year is off to an even slower start, with GDP growing 0.2 percent in the first three months," he writes.

The number and "quality" of jobs available also are problems, Rove says, with 4.5 million Americans working part time in December 2007 and 6.6 million working part time last month, a 46 percent increase.

"More part-time workers are getting fewer than 30 hours a week, in part probably because of Obamacare," he adds.

Additionally, the median household income has dropped from $54,059 in 2009 to $51,939 in 2013 – during an economic recovery.

"The president who harps on inequality as a 'defining issue of our time' has demonstrated that the middle class fares badly under progressive economic policies," he writes.

Meanwhile, the national debt has gone up to 74.1 percent today from 40.8 percent the month Obama took office, Rove writes, "the largest increase in a six-year period since World War II."

"Also left for his successor are entitlement programs that will go bust: the Social Security disability trust fund in 2016, the Medicare hospital trust fund in 2030 and Social Security’s Old Age and Survivor’s trust fund in 2032," Rove writes.

"This is only a partial list of the domestic challenges Mr. Obama will pass on to the next president and doesn’t include the long roster of international problems he has created, ignored or messed up," Rove adds.

"It is … a challenge to Republicans to share their own" lists "on how they will clean up the mess Mr. Obama will leave."
