Bringing in the Republican Party's big guns to campaign for him has paid off for Sen. Pat Roberts, who has drawn even with Independent opponent Greg Orman, according to a new poll.

The latest survey from Monmouth University in New Jersey found the candidates tied with 46 percent each after Orman had broken open a lead with Kansas voters when the race's Democrat dropped out, CNN reported.

Roberts gained in the polls with help on the campaign trail from Sen. Ted Cruz, Rep. Paul Ryan, former majority leader and Kansas native Bob Dole and even former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, covering the full spectrum for state Republicans, the Washington Post reported.

Meanwhile, Republican Gov. Sam Brownback was behind in his race against Democratic challenger Paul Davis, who was outpacing him 50 percent to 45 percent in the same Monmouth poll, according to CNN.

"The Kansas polls have been volatile ever since the Democrat nominee withdrew from the Senate race," noted Patrick Murray, who directs the university's Polling Institute in handicapping the races. "There may be enough ticket splitting to give the Republicans a win in one contest but not the other."

In the latest polling, Roberts is winning Republicans in his state with 76 percent of the vote as he increases spending against Orman, who has distanced himself from unpopular President Barack Obama, the Post noted.

About $4 million, much from outside the state, has been pumped into the race on behalf of Roberts, according to the Wichita Eagle. The outside money outpaces that spent on Orman by eight-to-one, the paper noted, as Republicans fight to keep the Senate seat.

“Kansas has never before seen in its history such a massive effort by so many interest groups to keep one man in office,” Washburn University political science Professor Bob Beatty told the Eagle.

Other polls show the cash infusion working as Roberts moves ahead slightly. A survey released this week from the Remington Research Group in Kansas City found the senator with a two-point lead, 48-46 percent, the Eagle reported.
