Sen. Kamala Harris on Thursday called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign because his actions in FBI Director James Comey's firing "calls into question his objectivity" in the Russia investigation.

"In the last 48 hours, that he would sign off on firing the person who is investigating the case he is recused from, it calls in to question his objectivity and his ability to keep his word, when he has told the American public and Congress that he will recuse himself from being involved with the subject that he knows he has a conflict with," the California Democrat told Jake Tapper on CNN, referencing the attorney general's March decision to recuse himself from the Moscow inquiry.

"Let's be clear about this: In the president's letter to James Comey, he referenced the Russia investigation."

Harris, 52, the former California attorney general who was first elected to Congress in November, also raised concerns about Sessions' Russia disclosures during his at his January confirmation hearing.

"There is good reason to believe that he was not truthful when he testified before Congress," she said.

She slammed the memo Sessions received, which he presented to President Donald Trump, from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein recommending Comey be fired because of last year's news conference about the Hillary Clinton email probe.

"If that is going to provide the basis for the president of the United States to fire the director of the FBI, then it should be much more substantial," she told Tapper.

"It should cite law, it should cite [Department of Justice] regulations, it should cite codes of conduct, it should cite facts that are not double hearsay, it should cite procedural authority as a basis for the action recommended.

"None of that was present in that memo," Harris said. "That was written by somebody more concerned with [public relations] than justice."

She said Rosenstein's document was "an insufficient basis" for the dismissal.

"I believe that what has happened has really called in to question the integrity of the process – and it is wrong."
