Kaine: Democratic Base 'Energized' by Outcry Against Trump

The Democratic Party is "energized" by the outcry against President Donald Trump's administration, and the growing fight will "help us do our job and do it better," former Democratic vice presidential nominee Sen. Tim Kaine said Tuesday.

"We are so excited that the American public is energized to speak out against the abuses of this administration," the Virginia lawmaker told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program. "The way we get outside the bubble is we take advantage of this tremendous public outcry against the administration. What we've got to do is fight in Congress, fight in the courts, fight in the streets, fight online, fight at the ballot box."

The momentum is growing, said Kaine, and "we're not afraid of the popular outcry."

Kaine also spoke out against Trump's executive order on travel and refugees, saying there was initially a huge amount of confusion at the nation's airports.

"There hasn't been anybody detained at Dulles [International Airport] since Sunday morning," said Kaine. "But in the early hours after the order went in, there was a huge amount of confusion about it and we've heard complaints that people's green cards were seized. We've heard complaints that people were forced to sign waivers they may have waived special immigrant Visa status. We are trying to get to the bottom of that."

The initial decision to apply the ban to Green Card holders and people with immigrant Visas, who had "helped our troops on the battlefield," was an "outrage," said Kaine.

"Lawyers at Dulles have been providing names of individuals to my case work staff there over the weekend working on this," said Kaine. "We haven't gotten to the bottom of the individual complaints but we have at least gotten customs and border patrol to clarify the application of the order, how it's being applied to Green Card holders ... it was rolled out so poorly, there was mass confusion."

The decision and rollout, Kaine continued, was a "disaster. It was bad in substance and horribly rolled out. It does appear in the first few hours after some of the court rulings in New York and Virginia the White House was taking a cavalier attitude about it."

But this is what happens, Kaine said, "when you get important national security policy made by political hacks instead of by the agencies and cabinet departments that are subject to Congressional oversight."

The White House was badly burned in the matter he continued, "because they didn't pay attention to the people who knew what they were doing and listened to folks who approach everything as if it's just another political game rather than people's lives are at stake."
