Libertarian-Leaning Justin Amash: Vote For Rand Paul

By    |   Monday, 04 May 2015 06:25 PM

Rep. Justin Amash, a Michigan Republican with Libertarian views, announced his endorsement of Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul for president Monday.

According to a Washington Post report, Amash made his presidential pick at the Kent County (Mich.) Republican Party headquarters during a campaign stop with Paul.

"Rand Paul is a once-in-a generation sort of candidate," Amash said.

"Rand Paul is the most electable candidate for president that we have. He's the one person who can unite our party and also bring new people into the party."

Paul also has Libertarian views, and Amash was a Congressional ally of Ron Paul, a former member of Congress and the father of Rand Paul. Amash's endorsement, writes the Post, was not a big surprise.

"I'd say he's a fellow wacko bird. Remember there was some old guy, I can't remember his name, who called us wacko birds," Paul said of Amash. "How wacky is it to be somebody who actually believes in the Constitution and all of the Bill of Rights?

"I won't tell you who it is, but it's a senator from Arizona."

Paul was referring to Arizona Sen. John McCain, with whom he's had a public feud regarding foreign policy.

In January, a new member of Paul's staff was forced to apologize after she made a derogatory comment about McCain in 2013 before she was hired.

Paul, according to the Post report, talked about privacy for much of his speech on Monday — a topic he and Amash have embraced as politicians. Paul's mention of the Fourth Amendment, which prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures, drew a remark from the audience.

"May the Fourth Amendment be with you," said a member of the audience, referencing both the date and the "Star Wars" movies.

Paul also made mention about Richard Jewell, a security guard who was initially thought to have been connected to the bombing at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Jewell was later cleared of any wrongdoing in the case, but not until he was blasted in the media for his suspected role in the attack that killed two people and injured more than 100.

"If Richard Jewell had been a black man in south in the 1920s he wouldn't have lived the rest of the day," Paul said.

"Bias because of color, because you're Jewish, or because you're an Evangelical Christian, or because you teach your kids at home. You can be a minority for a variety of reasons."

It was reported Monday that Amash is one of several lawmakers pushing for reform of the Patriot Act due to privacy concerns.

Paul announced he was running for president last month.
