Republican Josh Hawley, the Missouri attorney general, has become a favorite to challenge Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., in 2018, the Washington Examiner is reporting.

A Hawley candidacy gained steam after Republican Rep. Ann Wagner decided against making a bid for the seat. Wagner had been recruited by Republican leadership to take on McCaskill, according to the website.

"He's a conservative dream candidate," the Examiner quoted a Missouri GOP insider. "He is young, energetic, attractive, an outsider — a Federalist Society down the line intellectual and to an extent a grassroots conservative. He's a (Utah Sen.) Mike Lee candidate, but better looking."

And some say Hawley had become a favorite for the race with some top Republicans even before Wagner decided against it.

"He's obviously an excellent vote-getter because he led our ticket in the last election, but beyond that I think he adds a great deal to politics and to government by his presence in it,” former U.S. Sen Jack Danforth is quoted in the Kansas City Star.

But Democrats remain confident they can keep the seat.

"Congresswoman Wagner reached the conclusion voters already know: nobody can out-work Sen. McCaskill and no one else would be a more effective champion for the state's working families," said David Bergstein, spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

"The spotlight will now shift to other potential candidates who have been hiding from the reckless Republican agenda, but for these potential candidates there will be no escape from the GOP's proposals that will hurt Missouri's middle class."
