Fox News reporter John Roberts fired back at Deputy White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Tuesday after she called him out for leaving the daily press briefings early.

Roberts left early for a TV appearance. When Sanders noticed, she joked, "John Roberts is bored today; he's stepping out."

In a rebuttal, he said he wouldn't have stepped out "if it was on camera."

Following rules set by the Trump administration, news networks can only air question-and-answer sessions after the briefing is finished, which means still pictures of Sean Spicer or Huckabee flash on the screen as they talk off camera. Networks are pushing for the White House to put the briefings back on camera and be shown live. The last on-camera White House briefing was on June 29.

CNN senior White House correspondent Jim Acosta, who has complained on air about the Trump administration "taking us into a strange new world where accountability doesn't exist," last month repeatedly asked Spicer, "Why don't we turn the cameras on, Sean?" but didn't get an answer.

Former press secretaries Ari Fleischer and Mike McCurry have both publicly called for briefings not to be held live on camera, believing it makes for showmanship.

"I'm for toning down Washington, D.C. Too much fighting, not enough getting done for the country," Fleischer told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" Tuesday. "And part of that is why I'm supporting taking the briefing off of live TV," he added. "The briefing should be more of a serious briefing than a red-hot TV show."
