Sen. John McCain went on the Senate floor Tuesday to refute President Donald Trump's comparison of the United States to Russia – calling the parallel "either terribly misinformed or incredibly biased."

"There is no moral equivalence between that butcher and thug and KGB colonel," the Arizona Republican said referring to Russia President Vladimir Putin, "and the United States of America, the country that Ronald Reagan used to call a shining city on a hill."

He added that to "allege some kind of moral equivalence between the two is either terribly misinformed or incredibly biased. Neither, neither can be accurate in any way."

Though McCain never mentioned the president's name, his high-profile rebuke comes amid a backlash over Trump's statement during an interview with Fox News' Bill O'Reilly.

Politico notes the public scolding of a GOP president by a sitting Republican senator is rare.

But ahead of McCain's Senate scold, Trump had already responded to the "haters" of his warmer relations with Putin.
