Sen. John McCain has dismissed rumors he's mulling a third-party run in a bid to take down Donald Trump.

"I just think the people have spoken," McCain, an Arizona Republican who unsuccessfully ran for president in 2008, told syndicated radio host Hugh Hewitt on Wednesday.

McCain's words were a tribute to the late Rep. Mo Udall of Arizona who, after losing to the 1976 Democratic nomination to Jimmy Carter, uttered, "The people have spoken, the bastards!"

"And so, so I kind of feel a bit like Mo Udall," McCain told Hewitt. "The fact is that the Republicans have spoken, and I just honestly, I just don't see the scenario."

McCain and Trump have had a contentious relationship over the past year.

Last July, Trump said of Vietnam veteran and prisoner of war: "He's not a war hero. He's a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured." And though McCain recently said he didn't want a personal apology for the crack, he asserted Trump owed one to POWs.

McCain has also expressed worry that a Trump nomination could give him problems with Hispanic voters in his bid for a sixth term in the Senate, according to Politico.
