Kerry: US Allies Won't Be 'Swayed, Intimidated' by Trump's Tweets

Secretary of State John Kerry said allies of the United States will not be "swayed and intimidated by a tweet" from President-elect Donald Trump.

Trump recently commented on the U.S.'s role in the condemnation of Israel's settlements in disputed territories by the United Nations, telling Israel to "stay strong" until his inauguration.

In an interview with NBC News, Kerry told Andrea Mitchell he would not "debate" Trump on this issue, but implied American allies have been "affected" by his comments on sensitive foreign policy issues.

Kerry also denied the U.S. was covertly behind the condemnation, or in any way worked with the four countries that put the resolution forward.

"Those four countries that ultimately brought it to the floor did so absolutely on their own," Kerry said. "I had no communication with those four countries in the course of that process."

"What we laid out today was a very constructive, pro-Israel, pro-region, pro-Palestinian, pro-the communities' ability to try to make peace," he said. "Why are people fighting peace? What is suddenly in the air that people want to go down a road which is so obviously confrontational? For years, Republican and Democratic administrations alike have invested in two states."

Kerry would not comment on David Friedman, a strong supporter of the settlements, whom Trump has chosen to be the next U.S. ambassador to Israel.

"It's not my job to comment on the nominees of the new president," he said. "I will respect the process."
