John Kasich, the Ohio governor who has been one of Donald Trump's stronger critics in the GOP party, is set to meet with the president this Friday, CNN reports.

Details of the agenda were not made public and a Kasich adviser told CNN that the White House didn't offer a schedule. A senior administration official also told CNN the sit-down will be with Trump, Kasich and possibly Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and that the meeting is long overdue.

Kasich challenged Trump for the GOP nominee and didn't vote for him on Election Day. He has also challenged the president on many issues, most recently pushing back on him for his criticism of the press.

The news media "is such an important part of democracy," Kasich said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."

Kasich also urged Trump Sunday to reassure America's European allies that he is committed to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

"The president's people have all said it, but, frankly, he needs to be heard in a more … clear way," Kasich said. "Because, despite all these people being here, I have been meeting with all these folks from all over the world. They say: 'We're just not sure.'"
