John Kasich called Ted Cruz a "smear artist" Monday in response to an ad released by the Texas senator's campaign that trashes the Ohio governor.

Both men trail Donald Trump in the Republican race for president, and Trump and Cruz have called on Kasich to quit the race because he's only won one state.

Kasich has vowed to press on and is hoping for a contested convention this summer

"They've spent, I dunno, a million dollars smearing me — Ted, Sen. Ted, the smear artist," Kasich said after a town hall at Hofstra University, reports the Washington Post. "They're attacking me in Wisconsin. For a guy that's not doing very well, they sure are spending a lot of money trying to knock me out. But they're not gonna be successful."

The ad in question was released in Wisconsin over the weekend ahead of Tuesday's Wisconsin primary that could potentially reshape the Republican race. The 30-second spot calls into question Kasich's ties to a Fortune 500 company before and after he became Ohio governor.

"Right before John Kasich was governor, he collected $611,000 from a Fortune 500 corporation," says the narrator in the ad, which begins with Cruz approving it. "After Kasich became governor, that same company received $619,000 in state tax breaks for job creation but last year the company laid off 100 Ohioans even as its CEO cut a half-million dollar check to Kasich's super PAC. John Kasich: Not for us."

Cruz said Monday he refuses to "be a marshmallow."

"We have one guy with no experience and the other guy whose experience amounts to shutting down the government and calling the majority leader a liar," Kasich said of his two opponents, according to the Post. "How do we go to a convention and we pick somebody that can't beat Hillary? I'm not gonna be a pincushion. I'm not gonna be a marshmallow."
