Ohio Gov. John Kasich told Newsmax on Tuesday that he is confident his state's fellow Republican and incumbent Sen. Rob Portman will be re-elected in 2016.

Former Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland, unseated by Kasich in 2010, will be running against Portman for the Ohio Senate seat.

According to a recent Quinnipiac Poll of likely voters, Strickland leads Portman, the first Republican in statewide office anywhere to endorse same-sex marriage, by a margin of 46 percent to 40 percent.

Their contest is considered one of the Democrats' best opportunities to pick up a Republican-held Senate seat next year.

"I'm not worried about it," Kasich told us, adding that he believes Strickland's lead in Quinnipiac and other polls is "just a name ID issue."

Portman backers like to point out that when Strickland lost the gubernatorial election to Kasich in 2010, more than 350,000 jobs in the Buckeye State had been lost under the Democrat’s watch in Columbus, and Ohio was facing an $8 billion budget shortfall.

Under Kasich, they note, Ohio has eliminated its budget shortfall, cut taxes by $5 billion, and added 360,000 new jobs since 2011.

Kasich is set to announce his plans for a presidential campaign on July 21.

When asked to comment on Donald Trump and other announced or prospective candidates, Kasich declined, saying "at least for the next couple of weeks, I'd like to honor Reagan's Eleventh Commandment not to attack any fellow Republicans.

"I'm a believer that the country needs to be unified, not divided," Kasich said. "It's time we bring the country together. We don't need fighting or name calling.

"Americans today are not so much interested in what you are going to do but in what you have done."
