Texas Sen. John Cornyn confirmed Wednesday he will not endorse his colleague Ted Cruz for the 2018 midterm election.

Cruz could face a tough primary challenge from Rep. Michael McCaul in two years, something that Cornyn wants to stay away from, reports CNN

Cornyn's decision not to endorse Cruz, however, is an indicator of how cool the pair's relationship has become. Cruz did not get behind Cornyn during the 2014 primary.

"I'm not going to get involved in any primary races particularly with my colleagues in the Senate," Cornyn told CNN. "We'll see what happens, but we've got plenty to worry about between now and November 2016 before we start worrying about November 2018."

Cornyn, the Senate Majority Whip who first joined the legislative body in 2002, said he "would sit on the sidelines and watch [the race] with interest."

Support for Cruz's reelection as well as opposition to it is strong. For example, diehard Cruz backers who stood by his side through this year's Republican presidential primary want to see him continue in the Senate and launch another White House Run down the road. Those against him say they'll do whatever it takes to get him out of Washington.
