Senate Minority Whip John Cornyn said Tuesday he will seek the majority whip position and back current Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for majority leader if the Republicans claim the upper chamber of Congress.

McConnell won his sixth term on Tuesday, beating back a tough challenge from Democrat Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, as the Republicans moved a step closer to winning the Senate.

McConnell was projected as the winner by The Associated Press, CNN and Fox News.

"Well, I will, and I look forward to working with the new majority leader, Mitch McConnell," the Texas Republican told CNN earlier in the day, reports The Hill.

And while Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, who has said he wants the Senate to veer more to the right, told The Washington Post that he is reluctant to support the more moderate McConnell for majority leader, Cornyn said the Kentucky Republican has his backing.

"Mitch McConnell has got the most experience. He's one of the sharpest minds," Cornyn said, responding to a question about the Cruz interview. "Our party is big enough for the whole spectrum of approaches we have, from the right to the left"

Cornyn is the second-ranking Republican member of the Senate, and rebuffed a prediction Vice President Joe Biden made earlier in the day that Democrats would keep the Senate with 52 seats.

"I think we win Alaska, which you know the pundits are saying we lose," Biden said in the interview, which aired on WPLR radio in Connecticut. "I think we win North Carolina, which is a tough race. I think we win New Hampshire, in fact I'm pretty, pretty confident we win New Hampshire."

Biden also predicted that Greg Orman, who is running as an independent in Kansas, will win and caucus with Democrats, a claim Orman's camp downplayed.

But Cornyn responded that "if we pick up two or three of those seats then I think it's going to be a big wave and a big night."
