The Bernie Sanders campaign is beginning to realize the independent Vermont senator has no chance of beating front-runner Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination, says Joe Trippi, campaign manager for Howard Dean's unsuccessful run in 2004.

"I think reality is setting in," Trippi was quoted by Jonathan Swan in The Hill on Monday.

The race was "over a long time ago," said Trippi, who has not taken sides in the 2016 contest. "It was clear to the people who were open to seeing it, but your own supporters tend to take a lot longer to recognize reality."

Sanders' fundraising dropped dramatically from $46 million in March to $25.8 million in April. Clinton brought in $26.4 million in April, the first time she has outraised Sanders this year, but a relatively steady amount from previous months.

Still, Swan writes, Sanders is likely to continue raising large amounts of money and stay in the race until the Democratic National Convention this summer.
