Democratic Sen. Joe Donnelly announced Sunday he'll support President Donald Trump's Supreme Court pick, Neil Gorsuch – making him the third to break with his party on the nominee.

"After meeting with Judge Gorsuch, conducting a thorough review of his record, and closely following his hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, I believe that he is a qualified jurist who will base his decisions on his understanding of the law and is well-respected among his peers," the senator from Indiana said in a statement.

Donnelly met with Gorsuch on Feb. 14.

The senator explained he was "deeply disappointed by the way the most recent Supreme Court nominee, Judge Garland, was treated by the Senate," but that he also believes "that we should keep the current 60-vote threshold for Supreme Court nominees."

Republicans have suggested they may resort to the "nuclear option" which would change Senate rules to allow a simple majority on the high court nomination.

The GOP holds a 52-person majority in the Senate and would need five additional Democrats to back Gorsuch if the rules are not changed.
