Rep. Jim Himes: House Panel's Russian Probe Back on Track

Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., said Tuesday the House Intelligence Committee's investigation into whether Russia meddled in the presidential election is back on track.

"I'm happy to say it looks like we're under way," Himes, a member of the panel, told CNN's "New Day" program.

The panel's chairman, Devin Nunes, R-Calif, had sparked outcries that he politicized the committee after he went to the White House last month to brief President Donald Trump on intelligence he had viewed, The Washington Post noted.

Nunes said the material revealed that some Trump campaign officials had been caught up in the government's surveillance of foreign nationals, according to the newspaper.

Reports later claimed three senior White House officials were involved in handling the information Nunes had reviewed, The Post said.

"We've been promised access and, of course, the lead Democrat, Adam Schiff has gotten access, to the material which sent Chairman Nunes off on his, I guess escapade would be the right word," Himes told CNN.

And he added: "I do think we're getting back to business, which is really important here — both for the investigation, but also for the oversight role that we have to play"

Asked why anyone should believe the committee, Himes said: "For starters, we will be there. The minority opposition is in the room. We will not be there if we are denied access to witnesses, if we're denied access to particular lines of inquiry.

"Look, I understand that there's always going to be a little bit of a question around the chairman's motivations. This isn't the first time, you know, his objectivity called into question."

Himes acknowledged he was aware that questions about the committee remain.

"So I understand that shadow exists," he said. "Look, we are going to stay in this investigation because we don't have an outside commission."
