Jared Kushner has been talking to key Republican lawmakers about loosening mandatory minimum sentencing — including nonviolent drug offenders — just as Attorney General Jeff Sessions has pushed the other way, The Wall Street Journal reports.

In fact, Sessions has made reversing Obama-era sentencing reprieves a staple of his law enforcement policies, especially when it comes to any kind of drug offender.

But starting in March, Kushner began a dialogue with Republicans — including chairs of both judiciary committees of Congress — about just the opposite, the Journal reports.

Kushner has been "quietly listening to all sides, including outside groups, to understand what's possible and to ultimately be able to make a recommendation to the president," a White House official told the Journal.

"It's a personal issue to him given his father spent time in prison. He got to know the families and got to see what's wrong with the federal prison system."

Kushner and Sessions also have met on the topic, the Journal reports.

But it's another blow to the embattled Sessions, who has been taking a beating over social media from President Donald Trump for recusing himself from the Russia probe to being soft on Hillary Clinton.
