Poll: Shaheen-Brown Race Now 'Breathtakingly Close'

In a key contest that could help determine control of the Senate, the New Hampshire race between incumbent Democrat Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Republican challenger Scott Brown is now "breathtakingly close," a poll shows.

A High Point University poll shows Shaheen leads Brown 48 percent to 46 percent, but the advantage is "statistically meaningless," Town Hall notes; the margin of error on the question is 3.5 percentage points.

"Three weeks before votes are counted in New Hampshire, a survey by High Point University finds the contest for U.S. Senate breathtakingly close, with incumbent Democrat Jeanne Shaheen holding a narrow 48 percent to 46 percent advantage over Republican challenger Scott Brown," the poll analysis declared.

The survey found that Brown holds 91 percent of the Republican base, while Shaheen holds 91 percent of the Democratic base. Independents are split, 45 percent for Brown and 46 percent for Shaheen.

The poll also showed that Shaheen's job approval rating, at 47 percent, to be higher than President Barack Obama's 41 percent, but that she still has 48 percent who disapprove of her. Obama's disapproval rating is 54 percent, the survey found.

The survey also found 43 percent of respondents say they're "worse off" financially than a year ago, and 63 percent say the country is on the "wrong track."

"In an election year that is expected to be very tough for incumbents, these numbers suggest turnout could be even higher than expected – a boon to candidates like Scott Brown," Town Hall notes.

Shaheen polled strongest with moderates, who backed her over Brown by 57-38 percent, and women, who supported her over Brown 53-41 percent.

"Appealing to more moderates and women, therefore, could put her over the top," Town Hall notes. "But if this poll isn't an outlier, we can say one thing with certainty: Sen. Shaheen's seat is no longer safe."
