Rep. Jason Chaffetz: Americans May Have to Choose Between New iPhone and Healthcare

Americans might have to skip buying the latest smartphone in order to afford healthcare, House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz said Monday.

"We're getting rid of the individual mandate. We're getting rid of those things that people said that they don't want," the Utah Republican told CNN's "New Day" program.

"And you know what? Americans have choices. And they've got to make a choice. And so maybe rather than getting that new iPhone that they just love and they want to go spend hundreds of dollars on that, maybe they should invest in their own health care. They've got to make those decisions themselves," Chaffetz said.

GOP Rep. Larry Bucshon said Chaffetz's comments were "unwarranted at this time," according to CNN.

On Tuesday, Chaffetz explained his comment further during an appearance on Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

"What we're trying to say—and maybe I didn't say it as smoothly as I possibly could — but people need to make a conscious choice and I believe in self-reliance. And they're going to have to make those decisions," Chaffetz said.

The House Republicans unveiled legislation Monday that retains some of the features of Obamacare, such as allowing those up to age 26 to stay on their parents' insurance, and providing protections for those with preexisting conditions. The plan removes the mandate for all Americans to buy health insurance, according to Politico.
