Illinois State Treasurer Enters Governor Race

By    |   Friday, 31 May 2013 01:50 PM

Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford plans to announce Sunday that he intends to seek the 2014 Republican nomination for governor.

"We're going to do it," Rutherford, 58, told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Rutherford began his career in politics as a legislative assistant in Springfield. He was later tapped as the Executive Director for the 1980 Reagan-Bush campaign. He went on to serve in the Illinois House from 1993 to 2002, and then the Illinois Senate from 2003 until his election in 2010 as treasurer.

Other potential GOP candidates include Chicago hedge fund manager Bruce Rauner and state Sens. Bill Brady and Kirk Dillard.

The winner of the Republican primary could face Gov. Pat Quinn, who is seeking another term, or Attorney General Lisa Madigan, who may challenge Quinn for the Democratic nomination.
