Hugh Hewitt: Give Trump a Chance

Radio host Hugh Hewitt called on Americans to give incoming president Donald Trump a chance.

"Please relax and give it a chance. Trump intends to do good things for a great country and to do them via constitutional means. He is open for business on America's behalf," Hewitt wrote in an opinion piece for The Washington Post.

"Trump's personality is unsettling to some who were used to President Barack Obama's calmer stance . . . Trump is loud and proud and big and bold and full of scorn for his opponents," Hewitt writes, but the brashness of Trump could be useful in cutting through bureaucracy.

Hewitt said that he believed the Supreme Court would not change directions under Trump, no matter whom he appoints to the vacant ninth seat.

Looking at Trump's choices for his Cabinet, Hewitt asked Americans to ignore rhetoric about the beliefs of Scott Pruitt, Trump's choice to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, and Andrew Puzder, his choice for Secretary of Labor.

Pruitt is not a climate change denier and Puzder believes in small business, Hewitt said.

Hewitt adds that Vice-President-elect Mike Pence is a "wonderful man, a conscientious person of compassion and action."

The power of the Constitution, the judiciary, and the media will keep Trump in check, Hewitt said. The host noted that Hillsdale College President Larry Arnn said that Trump has never questioned the authority of the Constitution's "design or intentions."

Hewitt was not always so optimistic about Trump. In October 2016, he called on Trump to withdraw his candidacy after the "Access Hollywood" video containing Trump's lewd comments surfaced.
