Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders' claim that the poor and working people have it worse in the United States than in "virtually any other country on Earth" is further proof socialists have "at best a tenuous relationship with reality," former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee says.

"That's true, unless you count, well … virtually any other country on Earth," Huckabee wrote Monday on his Facebook page.

"Not to downplay the serious problems of the poor and working people in America, but as Pew Research discovered, 88 percent of Americans qualify as either 'high income' or 'upper middle class' compared to the rest of the world.”

Huckabee, who ran for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination before dropping out and supporting Donald Trump, added:

"At least poor Americans can thank their lucky stars that they aren't living in a place where the average monthly salary after taxes is $31.85 and the government tries to deal with a crippling food shortage by forcing all fit adults to work in the fields.

"That place would be the socialist utopia of Venezuela."
