Huckabee: Independent Investigation Needed Into Trump's Wiretap Claims

President Donald Trump's claims that the Obama administration had Trump Tower "wiretapped" requires an investigation independent of Congress, Mike Huckabee said Thursday.

House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes recently revealed that Trump and his associates may have been recorded by intelligence agents monitoring foreign targets.

"It's not a full vindication yet, but it is a form of vindication because it does clearly show even what The New York Times had reported, and that is that there was surveillance in Trump Tower of Trump associates and perhaps the president-elect himself or maybe the candidate himself, we simply don't know," the former Arkansas governor told Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

"But it's apparent there was surveillance going on that's how they found out what Mike Flynn was up to, and so for any person to deny that there was some investigation, some surveillance, I mean they would just have to deny reality. Two things are troubling," he added.

"First, the fact that people's First Amendment rights were being violated," he continued. "These are private citizens of America. But No.2 and perhaps the biggest, where's the outrage that someone in the federal government took it upon themselves to illegally and unethically release information about private citizens that they were by law required to keep silent and secret.

"This is very troubling and yes, an investigation needs to happen."

Huckabee later said that he doesn't "think a congressional investigation will work because it's going to be partisan, both sides will accuse the other of not being fair. It's going to require an independent type of investigation because long gone are the days of the Sam Ervins and the Howard Bakers of the world who on a bipartisan basis could look for truth."

The governor was referencing former Sens. Sam Ervin, D-S.C., and Howard Baker, R-Tenn., the chair and ranking member of the Senate Watergate Committee that investigated former President Richard Nixon.

"People like [FBI Director] James Comey, I think, have compromised what would have been much more confidence in our federal agencies and the people who work there," Huckabee added.

"I think you'll have to find some people — and this is going to be hard to find — people who are above reproach. And it may be the longest search in American history to find it."
