Eight House Republicans who are facing re-election next year and who are being targeted by Democrats in those races have called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to recuse himself from investigations into Russia's involvement in President Donald Trump's campaign last year.

The Hill reports that eight members of the GOP, six of whom represent districts that voted for Democrat Hillary Clinton last fall, have called out Sessions. The list of lawmakers includes Reps. Carlos Curbelo (Florida), Brian Mast (Florida), Mike Coffman (Colorado), Martha McSally (Arizona), Darrell Issa (California), Ryan Costello (Pennsylvania), Barbara Comstock (Virginia), and Frank LoBiondo (New Jersey).

Reports surfaced Wednesday that Sessions did not disclose contacts he had with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. during Trump's campaign. During his confirmation hearing, Sessions told senators he did not have any contact with Russia regarding the presidential election.

The nature of Sessions' alleged conversations with the Russian ambassador is unclear. Republican Sen Ted Cruz of Texas said Thursday meeting with foreign ambassadors is part of being a U.S. senator.

"If you are doing your job, you meet with ambassadors and foreign leaders," said Cruz, who noted that Sessions met with 25 different ambassadors in 2016. "That's part of the job."

Trump said Thursday he stands by Sessions as his top man at the Department of Justice.
