House Conservatives Push For Spending Cuts in Face of Debt Limit Plan

Conservative House Republicans continue to push for new ways to cut spending, in the face of the leadership's debt limit plan.

Some would like the debt ceiling increase to include a Constitutional balanced budget amendment, The Hill reports

Republican Rep. Rick Crawford of Arkansas has introduced a measure that if passed would require a balanced budget amendment to be voted on by both the House and Senate.

He is trying to curtail spending that has left the nation in more than $17 trillion in debt.

Republican Rep. Steve King of Iowa offered his support for a balanced budget amendment in exchange for supporting the debt ceiling increase, but said it needed a spending cap of 18 percent of gross domestic product, which could be waived during a time of war or  comparable emergency. He also wanted it to include a requirement for tax increases.

"This would get me to vote for a limited debt ceiling increase . . . a balanced budget amendment to the United States Constitution," King said on the House floor.

Another measure was offered by Republican Rep. Andy Barr of Kentucky, proposing that the debt ceiling be suspended for 10 years, while Congress set up "fiscal sustainability" borrowing targets that would help reduce the debt during that same time period.

Barr's bill also called for lawmakers to have their to cut their pay if they went outside of those sustainability guidelines.

However, after the House GOP leaders said they were willing to hold a vote on increasing the debt ceiling limit on Wednesday in exchange for a repeal of cuts to military pension benefits, House Speaker John Boehner announced Tuesday that the House will hold a voteon a measure that will raise the debt ceiling without conditions.
