Polls show Hillary Clinton would defeat presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump in the general election, often by double-digits.

However, The Washington Post detailed 12 ways — which include getting indicted — Clinton could lose the presidency:
  • Self-inflicted damage. Though Clinton is perceived at her best when she's genuine and sincere, she can be at her worst when she veers off-script. She's expected to lose the Kentucky primary on Tuesday, partly because of statements like this: "We're going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business," the Post notes.
  • Another potential perilous pitfall for Clinton — moving too far to the left … and to the right. Democratic rival Bernie Sanders has forced Clinton to the outskirts of the left during their primary, and has said he wants input on the party platform. On the other hand, Clinton will likely go after disaffected moderate Republicans who want nothing to do with Trumpism. Though Trump's platform is a moving target, Clinton is to his right on campaign finance and trade, the Post reports.
  • Making a mistake in her choice of vice president.
  • How Clinton engages — or not — with Trump's attacks.
  • Complacency. Think Michigan primary, where Clinton lost to Sanders despite polls showing double-digit leads.
  • Not inspirational in her vision for the country.
  • Not likable enough.
  • Labeled the status quo candidate.
  • Husband, Bill, hurting her on the stump when he, too, goes off-script.
  • Being too secretive. The Goldman Sachs transcripts will come up again.
