Hillary Clinton took sharp aim at Donald Trump's outreach efforts with African American voters, decrying what she said is a myopic view that only sees the black community as beset by "poverty, crime and despair."

Speaking at a meeting of the National Baptist Convention in Kansas City on Thursday, the Democratic presidential nominee said such views are "missing so much."

"I'm sure some of you are sick and tired of politicians who think they can just show up at election time, say a few nice words and then just earn your support," she said, without mentioning Trump's name. "You and your congregation deserve better than that.

"You know better than anyone that people who look at the African-American community and see only poverty, crime and despair are missing so much."

"I see the work you do and the lives you change," she added.

In a speech Aug. 24 in Michigan, Trump blasted Democrats for taking the black vote for granted, and declared: "You're living in poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58 percent of your youth is unemployed — what the hell do you have to lose?"

Clinton also brought up a particularly sore subject with some black voters: Trump's past insinuation the nation's first black president was not born in the United States.

"We are facing a candidate with a long history of racial discrimination in his business, who traffics in toxic conspiracy theories like the lie that President [Barack] Obama is not a true American," Clinton said "to applause and amens," The Hill reported.

"If he doesn't even respect all Americans, how can he serve all Americans?"

"We must keep calling him out and rejecting the hateful, bigoted rhetoric that seeks to pit Americans against each other and continue making the case in every way for our vision of an America that is stronger together," she added.
