President Donald Trump early Saturday criticized Democrats who have come out against the Senate plan to address the nation's healthcare system, tweeting, "Democrats slam GOP healthcare proposal as Obamacare premiums & deductibles increase by over 100%. Remember keep your doctor, keep your plan?"

The Senate unveiled their proposal on Thursday after weeks of negotiations that have taken place behind closed doors. Senators looked to improve upon the House's American Health Care Act passed last month that attempted to address problems brought about by Obamacare. The Senate plan was immediately slammed by Democrats, and several Republicans also were wary of embracing the suggested changes.

The Senate bill, which is still in the draft stage, reverses some taxes currently mandated by Obamacare while also providing tax credits for low-income people. It would also phase out Obamacare's Medicaid expansion over a period of time and eliminate the individual mandate which forces citizens to purchase health insurance or pay a fine.

The Senate bill needs 50 votes in order to pass. If approved, it would then go back to the House, which would either pass the Senate bill and send it to the president or negotiate further changes. If altered, it would again have to be approved by both the House and Senate.
