Greg Orman: I'll Work With Democrats, Republicans

By    |   Tuesday, 04 Nov 2014 02:19 PM

Kansas Independent candidate for the Senate Greg Orman told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" he's a problem-solver willing to work with either Republicans or Democrats.

"I've said from the beginning, that I'm going to caucus with whichever party really wants to solve problems in the country," Orman said Tuesday. "I think that's a great opportunity to both define a problem-solving agenda in the Senate, and also hold the majority accountable, whoever the majority happens to be."

Story continues below video.

Orman is in a tight race against incumbent Republican Sen. Pat Roberts, and said if he won the election, he wasn't intending on "supporting or propping up the Democratic party or the Republican or party," but was more interested in "fixing America."

Orman, who surged ahead in polls after Democratic candidate Chad Taylor dropped out of the Kansas Senate race in September, has not defined which party he would support if he won the election. He maintained he had been "very Independent for most of my political life," though he added he had been a member of both the Democratic and Republican parties.

"I've supported Democrats in the past. I've supported Republicans in the past. But, I've just sort of finally gotten to the point where I think the two-party system isn't working for us. And, the only way to really challenge Washington is to challenge the two-party system," he said.

Kansas voters were frustrated with partisanship in Congress and "the endless game playing and the fighting," Orman said, adding that after 47 years in Washington, Roberts was "disconnected from the state."

"When he's there, he doesn't even bother to go to committee meetings. And, when he votes, he votes against the interests of Kansans," he said.

Voters in Kansas were attracted to an Independent candidate because they were "fed up with both sides of the aisle," Orman maintained.

"They believe that both sides are more interested in playing political games and winning elections than they actually are in terms of solving problems," he said.
