Grassley: Bipartisanship Helping GOP Advance Senate Efficiency

Republican leadership is helping the Senate's efficiency ratings, and bipartisanship has allowed progress to grow, Sen. Chuck Grassley said Saturday.

"Republicans and Democrats can work together," the Iowa Republican said in Saturday's GOP address. "Bipartisanship has allowed us to make progress on good ideas from senators on both sides of the aisle."

And as a result, from the time the first Senate bill was debated in 2015 under the then-new Republican majority, "the Senate considered more amendments, from both sides of the aisle, than the entire previous year under the leadership of Harry Reid."

Working together, the senator said, ensures that the GOP-led Senate "hasn't wasted time or resources. It’s a formula for representative government that puts us to work for you."

Grassley said bipartisanship has also helped with his work chairing the Senate Judiciary Committee, as it focuses on areas where there can be agreement rather than on "political fights destined for failure."

All 27 bills passed through the committee under his leadership have had bipartisan backing, and President Barack Obama has already signed 12 of them into law, said Grassley.

"With four months left in this Congress, the Judiciary Committee has already outpaced the previous Congress in bills processed in committee, passed in the Senate and signed into law," Grassley said.

Those bills have focused on addiction and on reducing the market for sex trafficking and modern slavery, expanding support for its victims.

The committee also worked to expand government transparency "to make the federal government more accountable to the American people," said Grassley.

There are several more bills in the works, said Grassley, including legislation aimed at steering young people away from crime; reducing criminal acts against senior citizens; keeping better tabs on convicted sex offenders; and recalibrating sentences for low-level drug offenders.
