Betsy DeVos' road to becoming secretary of education got more difficult Wednesday after two Republican senators said they would vote against her.

According to The Hill, Maine Sen. Susan Collins spoke on the Senate floor and revealed the news. CNN reports that Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski has joined her in opposing President Donald Trump's nominee.

"I come to the floor to announce a very difficult decision that I have made, and that is to vote against the confirmation of Betsy DeVos to be our nation's next secretary of education," Collins said.

Both lawmakers were on the fence about whether they would support DeVos when the nomination is put up for a vote in the full Senate body. No Democrats are expected to support her.

Republicans have 52 seats in in the Senate, compared to the Democrats' 48.

If the vote ends in a 50-50 tie, Vice President Mike Pence would break it by giving an additional vote to DeVos. Knowing that, DeVos is still safe if all she loses is the support of two Republicans.
